Even in cases where couples agree that a divorce is in their best interests, going through the legal steps involved in obtaining a divorce order can be a complicated process. There are numerous issues which must be addressed, which can impact your well-being, your relationship with your children, and your financial security for years to come. At Andrea Heckman Law, our Schaumburg divorce attorneys provide the experienced, professional legal representation you need in these situations. With over 10 of representing clients throughout the area, we can help ensure your rights are protected in even the most complex divorce cases.

Professional Representation You Can Trust in Divorce-Related Matters

Divorce in our state is governed by the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Statutes. These laws dictate the procedures which must be followed and the issues which must be resolved before your divorce can be finalized. Even in uncontested divorce cases, in which both parties are in agreement on getting a divorce, the following issues must be addressed:

  • Marital property division: Any property or assets you or your spouse earned, acquired, or otherwise accumulated during your marriage will be divided on an equitable, though not necessarily even, basis.
  • Spousal maintenance, or alimony: Spousal support may be an issue in your divorce depending on the length of the marriage, whether one spouse has considerably more earnings or assets than the other, or if one sacrificed their own career to support the other or the sake of the children of the marriage.
  • Child custody and parenting time: You and your former partner will be required to submit a parenting plan, outlining the residential and parenting time arrangements for your child, along with legal responsibility for decisions affecting their education, health, development, and religious upbringing.
  • Child support: Depending on parenting time arrangements, the Cook County Court may order one of the parents to make regular child support payments to provide for the child’s food, clothing, shelter, and other needs, which may include requiring them to provide health insurance benefits.
